H. Johnthan Chao named department head of Polytechnic University

Dr. H. Jonathan Chao, a noted expert in high-speed routers, has been named head of Polytechnic University`s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Chao is recognized for prototyping the world`s first SONET-like framer chip in 1987. Since then, SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) has become the transmission standard in today`s optical network. He holds more than 20 patents and is a co-author of two networking books, Broadband Packet Switching Technologies and Quality of Service Control in High-Speed Networks, both published by John Wiley & Sons in 2001. Among his honors, he was named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to the architecture and application of very large scale integrated circuits in high-speed packet networks. He received the 1987 Excellence Award from Telcordia Technologies Inc., and is a co-recipient of the 2001 Best Paper Award from the IEEE`s Circuits and Systems Society. (Source: Poly News)
