Ming Pao, a daily in New York, launched a local edition in San Francisco at the end of April. It becomes the sixth Chiense language dialy newspaper in San Francisco in competition with the Sing Tao Daily, World Journal, China Times, International Daily News, and China Press. Ming Pao has a circulation of 25,000, sold for a quarter a copy.
The Bay Area is the latest North American battleground for Ming Pao, which fought against World Journal and Sing Tao Daily in Toronto, Vancouver and New York in the last decade. Sing Tao is more dominant in San Francisco, while World Journal has a strong base in the South Bay, say community observers and newsstand sellers. The Chinese Press and International Daily News focus on China.
The Bay Area's foreign-born Chinese population is 278,328 -- with 51, 257 hailing from Hong Kong, and 50,164 from Taiwan, and 176,907 from the mainland, according to census figures. (Source: Vanessa Hua, San Francisco Chronicle, Aug. 3, 2004).
